During the last years the Department of Chemistry of Genova has been studying and comparing different materials and approaches to problems of consolidation and protection of lime based plasters; the research took into consideration several kinds of products, both inorganic and organic, applied on fresco painted plasters in order to compare their efficacy. The behavior of the treated plasters was then compared with not treated plasters. The inorganic products were calcium hydroxide, barium hydroxide, ethyl silicate and ammonium oxalate, while the organic ones were silane/siloxane, fluorinated and acrylic materials; in addition some samples were in situ polymerized using as monomer the 1,6-hexanediole diacrylate. Several tests were carried out on samples before and after treatments: colorimetric measurements, water absorption by capillarity, water evaporation, abrasion resistance and contact angle evaluation, besides characterization by optical and electronic microscopy and XRD diffraction. The preliminary results of such a project are here quoted, with significant comparisons of some properties which have changed according to the treatment.
