In this work we are reporting on the results obtained in a laboratory investigation undertaken with the objective of assessing how the addition of low fired brick dust, pozzolan, or marble powder to a lime based mortar, influence some of the most relevant mortar properties. With this purpose, a reference mix and three sets of mixes were prepared using three different amounts of the above mentioned mineral additions. Bulk density, consistency and porosity were measured on fresh mortar. For every mix measures of compressive strength, porosity parameters, and the water absorption coefficient were performed. The measurement of water vapour diffusion is in progress. The structural features of the mixes were examined using optical and fluorescence microscopy. The results obtained show an increase of the mechanical properties for the mixes with addition of brick dust or pozzolan, while the mixes with addition of marble powder show a decrease of the mechanical properties.
