Valentina Russo: «Sull'orlo di un precipizio bagnato dal mare»: un percorso di conoscenza per la conservazione dell'abbazia di San Pietro a Crapolla

The paper – deriving from the Feasibility study for the restoration, the conservation and the valorization of the area of Crapolla in the Surrentine peninsula – aims to highlighting the significance of the Benedectine abbey of Saint Peter, located on the promontory dominating the Crapolla fiord in Massa Lubrense with regards to its restoration issues. The medieval architecture is investigated with reference to historical transformations, paying attention to the role of the abbey in the Sorrentine peninsula. The relations between the medieval basilica and the pagan pre-existences are deepened with attention to archaeological fragments and to the asset of the 12th century church. The contribution correlates archival and iconographic documents to the in-situ knowledge of the fabric; materials and building techniques are explored in relation to the medieval ruins and to their decorations. The second part of the essay pays attention to diagnostic analysis and to the problems of restoration of the abbey of Saint Peter in Crapolla in connection with the landscape context: modalities of conservation of its fragmentary remains and perspectives of preservation of the full authenticity
of the monument are studied in depth taking into account the relevant issue of the ruins' fruition.
