Paola Traversone: Notazioni storico artistiche in margine al restauro dell’altare maggiore della cattedrale di Genova

HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC “NOTES IN THE MARGIN” REGARDING THE RESTORATION OF THE MAJOR ALTAR OF THE CATHEDRAL OF GENOA
Following the work carried out to restore and reinforce the major altar in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Genoa, the two statues of angels have been put back in their place at either side of the altar. The complex story of how these statues were created and of the figures who commissioned them leads us to believe that the two works were not in fact placed in the setting they were actually intended for. The restoration work has, however, brought to light a range of elements that indicate the opposite, particularly in view of the way the statues are fixed to the altar and the characteristics of the space they occupy. In addition, the whole altar was conceived as a machine that certainly seems to have been intended to hold both the two side statues and the central statue of the Madonna Queen of Genoa.

Notazioni storico artistiche in margine al restauro dell’altare maggiore della cattedrale di Genova A seguito dei lavori di restauro e consolidamento dell’altare maggiore della Cattedrale di San Lorenzo in Genova, sono state ricollocate le due statue di angeli ai lati dell’altare. La complessa vicenda legata all’esecuzione delle due statue e ai loro committenti induce a pensare che le due statue non siano mai state collocate effettivamente nel sito per cui erano previste. I lavori di restauro hanno però messo in luce diversi elementi che precisano il contrario, soprattutto a livello di fissaggio delle due statue e in funzione degli spazi che le stesse occupano. Inoltre tutto l’altare era stato pensato come una macchina che  doveva sicuramente ospitare la due statue laterali oltre a quella centrale della madonna regina di Genova.
